Sustainable coastal resource management requires sound understanding of interactions between coastal unconfined aquifers and the ocean as these interactions influence the flux of chemicals to the coastal ocean and the availability of fresh groundwater resources. The importance of submarine groundwater discharge in delivering chemical fluxes to the coastal ocean and the critical role of the subterranean estuary (STE) in regulating these fluxes is well recognized. STEs are complex and dynamic systems exposed to various physical, hydrological, geological, and chemical conditions that act on disparate spatial and temporal scales. This paper provides a review of the effect of factors that influence flow and salt transport in STEs, evaluates current understanding on the interactions between these influences, and synthesizes understanding of drivers of nutrient, carbon, greenhouse gas, metal and organic contaminant fluxes to the ocean.Based on this review, key research needs are identified. While the effects of density and tides are well understood, episodic and longer-period forces as well as the interactions between multiple influences remain poorly understood. Many studies continue to focus on idealized nearshore aquifer systems and future work needs to consider real world complexities such as geological heterogeneities, and non-uniform and evolving alongshore and cross-shore morphology. There is also a significant need for multidisciplinary research to unravel the interactions between physical and biogeochemical processes in the STE, as most existing studies treat these processes in isolation. Better understanding of this complex and dynamic system can improve sustainable management of coastal water resources under the influence of anthropogenic pressures and climate change.

This paper presents an uncomplicated approach to improve estimates of groundwater nutrient load to a marine embayment. A two-dimensional chemical profile of shallow groundwater was analysed in a sandy beach in three seasons (early summer, late summer and mid winter) and an adjusted estimate of groundwater nutrient discharge was derived that accounts for a complex biogeochemical environment and non-conservative behaviour of nutrients in the pre-discharge beach groundwater. The study was conducted at Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, where there has been significant groundwater contamination and associated marine ecological degradation. Losses in nitrogen and increases in phosphorus were observed along the discharge pathway beyond that expected from mixing with marine water, and the changes were attributed to chemically and biologically mediated reactions. A slow groundwater velocity (0.14-0.18 m day -1 ), high organic carbon (TOC = 0.35-4.9 mmol l -1 , DOC = 0.28-4.6 mmol l -1 ) and low to sub-oxic conditions (DO = 0.4-24% saturation) were deemed suitable for chemically and biologically mediated reactions to occur and subsequently alter regional estimates of groundwater nutrient concentration. Accounting for this environment, groundwater loads were calculated that were 1-2 orders of magnitude less than previous regional-based estimates: 0.4-13 kg NO x -day -1 , 0.2-24 kg NH 4 ? day -1 and 0.004-0.8 kg FRP day -1 . This paper applies knowledge of recent research and presents scope to marine managers or modellers to account for groundwater inputs to the marine environment.

Detailed hydrographic survey revealed patches of high nutrients and low salinity in the surface waters over a submerged limestone barrier reef in the oligotrophic coastal waters of the southeast Indian Ocean. The nutrient patches exist throughout the year and represent concentrations that are more than 10 times those in the surrounding water. Numerical model results show that the nutrients originate from the reef and that the patchiness is caused by changes in water circulation. The limestone in the region is known to be solution riddled, and submarine seeps of nutrient-rich groundwater on the reef are a likely source. Underground conduits represent major routes by which groundwater nutrients can be transported over several kilometers and supplied to barrier reef ecosystems, resulting in ''islands'' of high productivity.
