Ralstonia pickettii—innocent bystander or a potential threat?

Abstract: A B S T R A C TRalstonia pickettii can be isolated from water, soil and plants, and can also form part of the commensal flora of the oral cavity and the upper respiratory tract of healthy individuals. R. pickettii is an infrequent pathogen, but can cause infections, mainly of the respiratory tract, in immunocompromised and cystic fibrosis patients. It can be isolated from a variety of clinical specimens, including sputum, blood, wound infections, urine, ear and nose swabs, and cerebrospinal fluid. Resistance c… Show more

“…Another group of Gram-negative bacilli occasionally isolated from individuals with CF belong to the genus Ralstonia (76, 100,101,107,495). Although the presence of this bacterium is often transient, in some CF patients the same strain of Ralstonia may be recovered for weeks or months, indicating chronic infection (106,579). Again, identification of these bacteria can be problematic, but new molecular approaches show promise of being more satisfactory (104,106).…”

“…These Ralstonia species are pathogens (Daxboeck et al, 2005;Stelzmueller et al, 2006). It is noteworthy that only five clones of Pseudomonas fluorescens, a species which was previously reported to be abundant in the cave (Orial & Mertz, 2006), were recorded.…”

“…In literature, several reports are available describing them as pathogens in several types of infections. [22][23][24][25][26] In this study, Flavobacterium spp. were isolated from UTI and wound infections.…”
