Randomized controlled trial: Comparative efficacy for the treatment of facial telangiectasias with 532 nm versus 940 nm diode laser

Abstract: While both 532 and 940 nm diode laser produced significant improvement in facial telangiectasias, greater efficacy was found with 940 nm as well as a significantly more tolerable side effect profile. Lasers Surg. Med. 41:555-562, 2009. (c) 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

“…Facial telangiectasia and diffuse facial erythema Recommendation 7: We recommend the use of lasers and IPLS for treatment of facial telangiectasia and diffuse facial erythema (GRADE 1A). 2,[51][52][53][54][55][56] Facial telangiectasias are common cause of cosmetic concern. Among available treatment modalities (electrosurgery, lasers and light sources) the latter two are considered both safe and effective.…”

“…Telangiectasias are one of the most common reasons people seek cosmetic laser treatment. Facial telangiectasias have been estimated to affect millions of people worldwide 6. Telangiectasias are defined as dilated blood vessels with a diameter of 0.1–1.0 mm and can be classified into four main types: simple (linear), arborizing, spider, and punctate 7.…”

“…Diode lasers may be used in up to Type IV Fitzpatrick skin and have limited usage in darker skin types. Diode lasers have a well-known usage in the treatment of unwanted hair; however, they may also be effective in the treatment of facial ectasias [6,12,16]. In a study by Tierney et al [6], they performed a randomized blinded split faced trial comparing 532 nm and 940 nm diode laser wavelengths.…”

“…color and darker, this is due to thrombus formation and vessel damage. Patients should practice photo protection with appropriate sunscreens with SPF 30 or greater, avoid trauma, and cigarette smoking [5,6]. Uelbohoer et al [7] performed a split face comparison of KTP and PDL for the treatment of telangiectasias and facial erythema in 15 subjects.…”
