Rapid detection of antimicrobial residues in poultry: A consequence of non-prudent use of antimicrobials

Abstract: A cross sectional survey was conducted in three major poultry markets at Enugu Urban area of Enugu State, South Eastern, Nigeria, to determine the prevalence of antimicrobial residues in commercial broiler birds using Premi® Test Kit. Antimicrobials generally due to their availability over the counter and non-enforcement of legislature on irrational use are often abused in both veterinary and medical practice in most developing countries. The misuse and overuse of these drugs lead to deposition of violative le… Show more

“…Over the past few decades poultry has gone through tremendous growth; however, with the increase in production, the use of certain drugs and feed additives has become crucial in order to prevent diseases, their treatment, and growth promotion. [1][2][3][4] However, one of the drawbacks of excessive use of antimicrobial drugs is that they get accumulated in the tissues and organs of treated animals as residues and eventually become part of the food pyramid, [1][2][3]6] hence excessive usage has been recognized as illegal and prohibited by the food regulatory and health authorities. [1,[3][4][5] This article elucidates the use of various antimicrobial agents in the poultry industry, their distribution and accumulation in various body parts and tissues and their subsequent effects on human health.…”

“…The high levels of antibiotic residues in beef are also indicative of the early slaughtering of animals without following the recommended withdrawal periods after administration of antibiotics to animals and lack of lairage. Ezenduka et al (2014) also detected antibiotic residues in 42 cases out of 70 with prevalence percentage of 60% in poultry meat by microbial inhibition test. The results are in close agreement with Agmas and Adugna, 2018.…”
