Rapid determination of abamectin in lettuce and cucumber using high-performance liquid chromatography

Abstract: A rapid, sensitive, and reliable method is presented for the determination of trace amounts of abamectin in lettuce and cucumber. Abamectin consists of >80% avermectin Bia and <20% avermectin Bib. Vegetables were extracted with ethyl acetate, and the extract was purified by solid-phase extraction using Sep-Pak silica cartridges. The purified extracts were analyzed by HPLC with a 5-µ Zorbax ODS column and UV detection under isocratic conditions. The method yields recoveries for avermectins Bia and Bib of 76-109… Show more

“…A number of methods have been developed for determination of individual ML residues in milk [88][89][90][91], salmon [60,[92][93][94] animal tissue [95][96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107], crops [108][109][110][111][112][113][114][115][116] and animal feed [117][118][119]. More recently, multi-residue methods, capable of determining two or more residues, have been reported [120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130][131][132][133][134].…”

“…Some of the problems that have to be overcome include the removal of pigments and control of sample moisture. Vuik et al extracted abamectin from cucumber and lettuce using ethyl acetate, with further purification on a Sep-Pak TM silica cartridge [108]. Prabhu et al extracted emamectin benzoate and its 8,9-isomer from celery and lettuce using methanol [109].…”

“…Abamectin was determined in lettuce and cucumber by ethanol extraction, silica Sep-Pak cleanup, and (2-18 HPLC-UV (245 nm) (012). Abamectin was determined in tomatoes with its A 8,9-isomer by acetonitrile/water/hexane (1:1:5) extraction, aminopropyl SPE, derivatization with trifluoroacetic anhydrideil-meth limidazole, and C-18 HPLC with fluorescence detection (8131, and 4"-deoxy-4"-(epimethylamino)avermectin B1 benzoate (MK0244) and its A 8,g-isomer in lettuce by a similar HPLC fluorescence method after ethyl acetate extraction and cleanup on a propyl sulfonyl cationexchange cartridge (014).…”
