Rapid discrimination of different Apiaceae species based on HPTLC fingerprints and targeted flavonoids determination using multivariate image analysis

Abstract: The use of chemometrics tools for evaluation of fingerprints reduced expense and analysis time. The proposed method can be adopted for routine discrimination and evaluation of the phytochemical variability in different Apiaceae species extracts.

“…The Umbelliferae family (Apiaceae) is one of the largest taxa among higher plants with more than 300 genera and 3000 species that are indigenous to the Mediterranean basin and distributed in central Asia and Europe. 1 Owing to a myriad of sensory metabolites and phytochemical constituents, members of this family are well recognized for their use in traditional medicine, culinary use, beverages and in cosmetics. Apart from serving as spices, they have been the target of many research work for their health benets as anti-tumor, antimicrobial, anti-inammatory, digestive, antispasmodic, estrogenic, hypoglycemic, radical scavenging and hypolipidemic activities.…”

“…Principal component analysis and HCA are powerful chemometric methods that have been widely used for classification studies (Shawky & Abou El Kheir, 2018). PCA involves unsupervised pattern recognition, which is the most frequently used method for reducing the dimensionality of numerical datasets in a multivariate space.…”

“…This family is very rich in terms of secondary metabolites. Coumarin [12,13], flavonoid [13][14][15], acetylenic compounds [13], sesquiterpene lactones [16][17][18] and essential oils [19][20][21][22][23] are obtained from many genera of the family.…”
