Rapid reduction in tenosynovitis of the wrist and fingers evaluated by MRI in patients with rheumatoid arthritis after treatment with etanercept

Abstract: Addition of etanercept significantly reduced MRI tenosynovitis of the wrist and fingers in patients with active RA refractory to DMARD treatment. The method of scoring tenosynovitis showed good reliability and moderate responsiveness.

“…Navalho et al as a frequent finding in early RA (29) as a risk factor for erosions (30,31) and as a potential marker of response to biologic treatment (32). Despite this fact, tenosynovitis of the wrists and hands has received far less attention in the literature than joint synovitis.…”

“…The most accepted means to measure therapeutic effect is OMERACT-RAMRIS (RA MRI scoring system). The RAMRIS consists of semi-quantitative assessment of bone erosion, bone marrow edema, and synovitis, which is sensitive to change over weeks as well as months [20][21][22]. RAMRIS is being used increasingly in trials of biological agents to measure changes in these markers for disease activities.…”

“…Synovitis, erosion, and BME were defined and scored according to the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology Clinical Trials (OMERACT) Rheumatoid Arthritis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scoring (RAMRIS) recommendations and wrist and finger tenosynovitis were evaluated by a method described by our group 13 . The acquisition of MRI images was performed as described in our previous studies 13,14 .…”
