“…Thermal assistance (e.g., preconcentration, desorption, etc.) has been employed with ambient MS to examine explosives and smokeless powders, , seized drugs, and emerging pollutants in drinking water. , Various substrates capable of spray-based ionization have been employed for targeted sub-sampling from complex forensic samples as a way to accommodate problematic matrices and surface geometries, such as swab touch spray ionization, wooden-tip ESI, and thread spray MS . Of note, paper-based substrates have been modified by both physical and chemical means to include preparative measures and increase analytical performance, such as the use of hydrophobic coatings to increase spray duration or analyte-specific sensitivity …”

“…Therefore, several follow-up studies will be centered on these preparation methods and alternative congurations. [35][36][37][38][39] Additionally, statistical evaluations involving algorithms to extract relevant OGSR proles and relate information to potential ammunition sources are of interest. This study serves as initial proof of the feasibility and versatility of DART-MS in monitoring OGSR signatures from various substrates quickly and effectively.…”

“…This study serves as initial proof of the feasibility and versatility of DART-MS in monitoring OGSR signatures from various substrates quickly and effectively. [36][37][38][39] Disclaimer Certain commercial products are identied in order to adequately specify the procedure; this does not imply endorsement or recommendation by NIST, nor does it imply that such products are necessarily the best available for the purpose.…”

“…The gas flow is directed at a sample surface, placed within the source in open air; analyte ions are formed in a chemical ionisation-like process and desorbed whereupon they are drawn into the mass spectrometer inlet. 2 Application areas range from forensics 3 and food 4 to quality control 5 and hundreds of papers have been published using DART-MS. A good overview of the fundamentals and broad scope of the technique has been given by Gross. 6 We have reported previously that the measured temperature of the sample reaches only a fraction of the set temperature of the gas 7 and to address this problem we have developed a novel combined hot-stage microscopy-DART-MS system (HDM) which uses a miniaturised ceramic hot-stage in the ion source to give much more precise temperature control of samples than that obtained with the DART alone, as well as allowing visualisation of melting and desorption behaviour through the integrated microscope.…”
