Rare earth elements determined in Antarctic ice by inductively coupled plasma—Time of flight, quadrupole and sector field-mass spectrometry: An inter-comparison study

Abstract: Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a suitable tool for multi-element analysis at low concentration levels. Rare earth element (REE) determinations in standard reference materials and small volumes of molten ice core samples from Antarctica have been performed with an ICP-Time of Flight-MS (ICP-TOF-MS) system. Recovery rates for REE in e.g. SPS-SW1 amounted to ~103%, and the relative standard deviations were 3.4% for replicate analysis at REE concentrations in the lower ng L -1 range. Anal… Show more

“…The results are presented in Table 3 ranged from 348 ng L -1 (Ce) to 1.8 ng L -1 (Tm) and the precisions (2 × RSD) ranged from 4.5% (Nd) to 43% (Yb) (N = 5). The values were consistent with the reported values (Yeghicheyan et al, 2001;Shimamura et al, 2007;Dick et al, 2008) and those for non-diluted samples.…”

“…Due to low content of REEs in water samples and complexity of matrix (e.g., marine samples) the most common sensitive analytical techniques used, are inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] Although ICP-MS has the detection power to determine traces elements at sub µg L −1 , it suffers from the problem of isobaric polyatomic interferences and its low tolerance to total dissolved solids (TDS). This technique is very expensive; its maintenance is very difficult and inaccessible for much laboratories.…”
