The catchments of the Klang and Ampang Rivers are two sub-catchments that drain into the main Klang River, Selangor, Malaysia. Due to the development and siltation processes, the current capacity of the Klang River in the city centre is insufficient for accommodating the excess flood flow during major events, and, therefore overflows the riverbanks causing flash floods to occur in the Kuala Lumpur city centre. This study investigates the relationship between the rainfall, discharge and suspended sediment transport and its variations during the dry and wet periods in tropical sub-catchments; identifies the different hysteresis types of single flood events in the suspended sediment concentration/discharge relationships in the dry and wet periods, and determines the relationship between the types of single event hysteresis loops and the hydrological and sediment responses. Principal component analysis was performed to examine factors that have a major influence on the suspended sediment yields during both the dry and wet periods. The clockwise and counter-clockwise hysteresis loops occurring mostly during the dry period, can be described as events with moderate total rainfall, rainfall intensity (less than 10 mmh −1 ), average discharge and suspended sediment load. Counter-clockwise events occurring during the wet period are associated with low total rainfall, rainfall intensity, average discharge and suspended sediment load. The clockwise and counter-clockwise events that occurred in the wet period are related to events with a Water Resour Manage (2015) 29:4519-4538 relatively high and low moisture condition, respectively. The figure-eight and complex hysteresis loop events occur predominantly during the wet period. The complex loop events occurred mostly during the wet period generates the highest suspended sediment load. A 'top-to-the-east' ultramylonite zone is identified in north-eastern Kuala Lumpur and named here as the 'Ukay Perdana Shear Zone (UPSZ). The UPSZ is at least 250-300 m thick, east-verging, and superimposed on the later stages of assembly of the c. 200 Ma S-type 'Western Belt' granite plutons generated by crustal thickening and assigned to the Main Range Granite Province. Younger bodies of S-type granitic rocks cut the shear zone. These intensely deformed quartzofeldspathic rocks contain distinctive relict porphyroclasts of perthitic K-feldspar (microcline), oligoclase and quartz, entrained within the ultramylonitic fabric. Migrating sub-grain boundaries in quartz indicate deformation occurred under moderate to high temperature conditions during ductile deformation (c. 500-600°C); undulose extinction suggests down-temperature evolution of the deformation history. This deformation event implies that the final stages of collisional interaction between Sibumasu and the Sukhothai Arc would have involved now east-directed (080°N, then generally northward) over-thrusting of the leading edge of Sibumasu onto the Sukhothai Arc/Indochina-East Malaya margin after 198 ±2 Ma. Kenny Hill Formation strata in Kuala Lumpur preserve widespread evidence of a dominant phase of E-or ENE-verging, upward-facing fabrics and folds; that deformation is judged to be a hanging wall response to deformation in the UPSZ. This early-Mesozoic structural framework is significant during assembly of the Peninsular Malaysia region of Sundaland; evidence form Kuala Lumpur is combined with new published Singapore data. Dextral strike-slip tectonics is superimposed on this collisional framework in the later Mesozoic and Cenozoic; subsurface development across Peninsular Malaysia, and in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore in particular, should account for deformation structures linked with this expanded record of Mesozoic tectonics.

A microgravity investigation on bedrock topography was conducted at Maluri park reference level in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The study aim to mapping the near-surface structure and soil and land cover distribution for geography and geophysics surveys. Two types of cross-section modeling of the residual anomaly generated the MaluriBouguer Anomaly model for site-1 and site-2 at Maluri Park. The 2D microgravity models produced the contour map, displaying the characterization due to density contrast in rock types while mapping the subsurface geological structure at different depths. Moreover, a synthetic model was initiated with the assumption of lateral distance on the left and right sides taken at 50 m and a depth of 60 m. The results of modeling confirmed that the soil and rock type composition on both models site tests are topsoil (1.1 to 1.92 g/cm3), soil (1.8 g/cm3), clay (1.63 g/cm3), gravel (1.7 g/cm3), sand (2.0 g/cm3), shale (2.4 g/cm3), sandstone (2.76 g/cm3), and limestone (2.9 g/cm3).
