Reaction of a New Thiol Cationic Surfactant with Bunte Salt in Wool Fibers

Abstract: A new, effective, specific quaternary ammonium compound, N-dodecyl-amino-betaine-2-mercaptoethylamine hydrochloride (dabm), is synthesized to confer permanent characteristics (antimicrobial properties, improved dyeing and softening) on keratin material (wool, human hair). We have studied the reaction between bisulphite-treated wool and dabm as a function of time in a buffered medium, and monitor it with ftir/atr spectroscopy, which allows us to follow the changes in cysteine-S-sulphonate groups (at 1023 cm–1) … Show more

“…Padding, spraying and foam finishing have been used for the silicone‐based quaternary ammonium agent 7. To improve washing durability, chemical bonding of the biocide with the fiber,8, 9 crosslinking on the fiber using a crosslinker10, 11 and polymerization grafting12 have also been trialed in the laboratory.…”

“…The spectral range was limited to 1200–1000 cm −1 , where the most important differences could be associated with the sulfur–oxygen bands. As shown in Figure 8, the peaks attributed to sulfur–oxygen groups such as 1201 and 1025 cm −1 for cysteine‐ S ‐sulfonate (Bunte salt), 1170 and 1040 cm −1 for cysteic acid, 1126 cm −1 for cystine‐ S ‐dioxide, 1077 cm −1 for cystine‐ S ‐monoxide, and 875 cm −1 for SO group in sulfinic acid,24–26 became more intense in hydrolyzed wool than in pristine wool. The increase in peak height attributed to sulfinic acid was also shown in regular FTIR spectra (Table IV).…”

“…Nevertheless, attempts have been made to covalently attach QAC onto wool. A new QAC, N-dodecyl-aminobetaine-2-mercaptoethylamine hydrochloride (DABM) was synthesized [67,68] and it can react with wool by means of its thiol group, either with cysteine-S-sulphonate residues (Bunte salts) of sodium bisulphite pretreated wool or with the disulfide bond of cystine wool, forming an asymmetrical disulfide bond. Such covalent attachment of the quaternary ammonium surfactant provides antimicrobial activity.…”
