Reaction of rodlet cells to a myxosporean infection in kidney of the bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus

Abstract: Bluegills, Lepomis macrochirus, netted soon after ice-out from two Minnesota lakes exhibited the early stages of a myxosporean infection involving the kidney tubules and glomeruli. When secretory rodlet cells were present in the tubule epithelium, parasites were absent or damaged. Tubules without secretory rodlet cells contained healthy-appearing parasites. Rodlet cell secretions appeared to contribute to the elimination of myxosporean parasites from bluegill kidney tubules. These findings support the author's… Show more

“…Its function is not clear yet (DESSER & LESTER 1975;BARBER & MILLS WESTERMANN 1985). However, there seems to be a relationship between their presence and the likelihood of stress to the fish (LEINO 1996;KOPONEN & MYERS 1999;DEZFULI et al 2000). The catfish analyzed in this study were collected directly from the environment and sectioned under anaesthetic.…”

“…Several cellular types are involved in the response against myxosporeans. Rodlet cells (RC) are among them, as they are generally increased in infected tissues or have been observed in close vicinity to myxosporeans, some times even discharching their rods (Leino, 1996;Palenzuela et al, 1999;Muñoz et al, 2000a). By contrast, RC are very scarce in D. puntazzo, even when infected by E. leei .…”

“…These enigmatic cells have been observed in tissues of marine and freshwater teleosts. Although their origin and function remain controversial, some authors attribute to them a role in the host's reaction against pathogenic organisms (Leino 1996, Reite 1997, Dezfuli et al 1998, and more specifically in the inflammatory response observed in certain parasitoses (Dezfuli et al 2000).…”
