Reactions of sciences to the Anthropocene

Abstract: The Anthropocene is the new geological epoch, characterized by the accelerating global influence of humankind and the impending point of no return on environmental changes. In this article, we highlight reactions of scientists to the challenges of the Anthropocene from the perspectives of biomimetics and sustainability research. To answer novel questions in the Anthropocene context, scientists have established relevant approaches to collaborate at an interdisciplinary level and have entered into exchange with … Show more

Understanding and creating are the main dimensions of the cognitive process that involve learning objectives of design courses based on biodiversity, which intersect with conceptual and meta-cognitive knowledge [21]. “…The concept of sustainability, for example, is inherently anthropocentric, and nature itself cannot be said to be sustainable by definition [36], as there are many examples of organisms having negative impacts on ecosystems (e.g., invasive species). Nature-inspired products are not automatically sustainable [32,37]. While there are cases where biom * products have shown to be more sustainable [38,39], it is crucial to assess their overall impact in a wider context before implementing them [40].…”

“…Voltaire, "Originality is nothing, however really apt imitation". From ants to timber, nature gives several models [10] that could assist construction managers to develop new answers to complicated systems and techniques. As such, construction educators can be able to improve their curricula and assist nurture the creativity of their students by way of looking past conventional approaches and techniques, and embracing interdisciplinary questioning as a way to shape the thoughts of destiny.…”
