Reactive oxygen species generation in aqueous solutions containing GdVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles and their complexes with methylene blue

Abstract: It this letter, we report the study of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in water solutions containing gadolinium orthovanadate GdVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles (VNPs) and their complexes with methylene blue (MB) photosensitizer. The catalytic activity was studied under UV-Vis and X-ray irradiation by three methods (conjugated dienes test, OH· radical, and singlet oxygen detection). It has been shown that the VNPs–MB complexes reveal high efficiency of ROS generation under UV-Vis irradiation a… Show more

“…The generated electron in the conduction band may move without restriction to the aggregated molecules; consequently, the generated e − / h + pairs are effectively separated and their recombination energy is remarkably minimized. Active species, such as hydroxy radical (OH), generated by the reaction between photo-generated holes with H 2 O or OH − oxidize the MB molecules to degraded products on the surface of nanofibers [ 55 , 56 ]. We have examined the photodegradation of MB in the presence of coumarin as a radical scavenger.…”

“…In the presence of coumarin, the degradation efficiency of RhB drastically decreased. This suggests that a portion of the hydroxyl radicals was removed by coumarin to form 7-hydroxycoumarin, and the rest reacted with RhB until decomposition [47]. Similarly, for the detection of the superoxide radical anion, we used hydroethidine as a fluorescent probe.…”

“…Then, if molecular oxygen (O2) is present, the HO⸱ radical interacts with O2, to form HOOO⸱, which is converted to HO⸱ and 1 O2 see Figure 16. Dissolved O2 and HO⸱ were also present in our samples during irradiation with X-rays 92 . More specifically, upon irradiation with X-rays, water molecules were ionized, to generate several radicals, including the extremely reactive HO⸱ 92 .…”

The resulting HO⸱ interacted with O2, to afford 1 O2 in a mechanism resembling the mechanism proposed in Figure 10.…”
