Reactivity of Diazonium Salts on Single- and Multilayer MoS2 on Au(111)

Abstract: There is significant interest in using single- and few-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) in nanoscale devices, stemming from the ability to tune its optoelectronic properties. One method investigated to tune the mechanical and electronic properties of MoS2 is through aryl radical addition reactions with compounds such as 4-nitrobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate (4-NBD). Here we investigated this for single-layer MoS2 (SLM) and multilayer MoS2 (MLM) on Au(111) substrates. The optical, chemical, and tribologica… Show more

“…For example, Au atoms at the MoS 2 -Au interface can substitute S vacancies to cause non-volatile memristive switching [32]. The strong MoS 2 -Au interaction also modifies the bonding of the top S atoms, thereby enhancing the reactivity towards diazonium molecules [33]. Finally, monolayer TMDCs on Au represent an intriguing system from the (photo)electrochemistry perspective [34].…”

“…To evaluate if the organic films are covalently bonded to the MoS 2 surface, we used STM. STM has been widely used for the characterization of functionalization of MoS 2 via physisorption 26 or chemisorption 27,28 of molecules. Furthermore, STM is a unique technique for the detection at the molecular level of grafted units on a surface as previously demonstrated for several materials, including MoS 2 .…”
