The translator’s voice, although ubiquitous in translation, is not clearly determined when it is applied to translation practices because translator’s voice and translation practices are not conceptually connected. This systematic review focuses on the body of literature regarding the translator’s voice. In this study, academic articles from 1996 to 2023 are surveyed by a criteria pre-set; in addition, a qualitative synthesis of the findings is conducted. Through description and analysis of the titles, abstracts, keywords, and full papers of the selected 50 academic articles based on a PRISMA flow (2020), this research systematically assesses the studies on translator’s voice from the past 27 years. It systematically searched all the related studies in two databases: the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Scopus (which are both accessible). It reveals: (1) more conceptual studies, more of which are unrelated to translation practices, are found; and (2) topics related to narratology are the most studied research objectives of the entire body of the studies covering the translator’s voice. Therefore, empirical studies and the translator’s voice in translated texts which are close related to translation techniques can both be highlighted in future research efforts. Future studies relating the translator’s voice to translation practices are needed so that translator’s voice can clearly present a translator’s creativity.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Translation Studies: A Case Study on Chinese Canon The Journey to the West

A Chinese classic novel The Journey to the West (Chinese: 西游记, pinyin: Xi You Ji) has been yielding large volumes of English renditions across genres and media in the past 120 years starting in 1895. This body of renderings gives considerable material for research on how particularly translations have been handled. To give an overview of this research, this article proposes a bibliometric analysis to sketch a map of the translation studies conducted so far on The Journey to the West. A series of queries are made: which translators are most researched; which translations are most often compared with each other; which research questions are most addressed or ignored; which theories are most applied to resolve these questions. As Rovira-Esteva et al. state, “we need maps to know where we are so as to be helped instead of unconsciously being steered by them” (p. 160). The multiple and complementary perspectives we provide in this article are constructive to identify problems and lacunas and point out future directions. The present analytical framework has been applied to English translations of a Chinese classic, but we believe it can be successfully extrapolated to other similar cases.

The role of childhood nostalgia in the reception of translated children’s literature

This article explores how childhood nostalgia influences the reception of translations, specifically in the case of the (re)translation of E. B. White’s children’s book, Charlotte’s Web (1952). I concentrate on two translations – one by Xin Kang (White 1979) and the other by Rongrong Ren (White 2004). The theoretical framework complements existing reception research with theories of nostalgia, collective memory, and cultural memory. A qualitative analysis of reader posts on social media sites shows that a group of adult readers prefer Kang’s translation because they read it as children and feel a nostalgic attachment to it. This nostalgia expresses itself in three ways: (1) Kang’s version, as a memory trigger, connects adults to their childhood, (2) sharing digitized versions of Kang’s translation and the online sale of its hardcover version creates nostalgic online communities based on a collective memory, and (3) Kang’s version is considered a classic that should, as a kind of cultural memory, be passed on to the next generation. In this article, I argue that childhood nostalgia, an often ignored extratextual factor, influences adult reception of translated children’s literature. I thus offer a new perspective on translation reception and the ‘aging’ issue in studies of retranslation.
