Many annotation systems proposed in the literature suffer from an under-exploitation of the annotation's semantic at the level of the assistance presented to the learner during annotative activity. Thus, these tools offer the same classic features to its users, such as management, search, sharing and storage of annotations. In this paper, we propose a new annotation system which differs in its novel features. The system tries to assist the learner via web services during learning activities. Therefore, from a user's annotation, our system is able to interpret a goal implicitly expressed and tries to discover and invoke a web service that can meet this annotation's objective. This system is based on an annotation model composed of an ontology and pattern annotation. This enrichment will provide advantages for both the provider, who will find his service within the consumer's reach, and the learner, who will have at his disposal an intelligent annotation tool.

In this paper the authors will discuss a pilot project conducted at the Tritonia Academic Library, Vaasa, in Finland, from September 2010 until May 2011. The project was designed to investigate the application of e-readers in academic settings and to learn how teachers and students experience the use of e-readers in academic education. Four groups of students and one group of teachers used Kindle readers for varied periods of time in different courses. The course material and the textbooks were downloaded on the e-readers. The feedback from the participants was collected through questionnaires and teacher interviews. The results suggest that the e-reader is a future tool for learning, though some features need to be improved before e-readers can really enable efficient learning and researching.

In the development of new research environments, hardware has often been neglected. E-readers have (reasonably) successfully been developed for leisurely reading, but reading with the goal of writing demands a different approach. This bibliography has been written to inform the INKE research group on physical aspects of digital scholarly reading. It consists of two parts: a hardware section, including a description of commercial e-readers as well as an overview of academically developed digital reading devices and a software section, also including commercially available packages next to academically developed reading environments which allow for flexible manipulation of text and other modalities; as well as reflections on digital scholarly reading. Combined, the two sections inform an integrated approach in the development of new research environments.
