Readmission Due to Exacerbation of COPD: Associated Factors

Abstract: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients with HFR are more frequently male, older, have worse dyspnea, lower lung function, belong more frequent to exacerbator emphysema phenotype, and more frequently diabetics. The variables that continued to be independent predictors of HFR in the multivariate analysis were sex, phenotype, occurrence of complications during admission, destabilized heart failure, and length of hospital stay.

“…21 Males, based on review and retrospective study, in accordance with our estimates, had a higher frequency of readmission. 44,45 Because females were less likely to self-report COPD and have COPD as a primary diagnosis, when women were readmitted within 30 days their reasons for readmission may not have been caused by COPD.…”

“…We developed a step-wise detailed search strategy. Four main key terms (COPD, readmission, risk factors and consequences) were developed as 'concepts' based on reviewing the previous systematic review and studies relevant to the topic [19,22]. Detailed alternative terms and synonyms for each of the key concepts were also identified as free-text terms and used to search in the databases as title and abstract.…”

“…11 Gender, history of frequent admissions, comorbidities, and length of stay (LOS) were relevant risk factors for 30- and 90-day readmissions. 11,12 Readmitted patients mostly participate in Medicare and Medicaid and suffer from more comorbidities. 13 Obviously, 30- and 90-day COPD readmissions are common, and patients with non-COPD readmission have a greater burden of comorbidities in readmission diagnosis than those in COPD.…”
