Real space observation of peroxide-like dimers on a sodium tungsten bronze surface by scanning tunnelling microscopy

Abstract: Oxygen dimers on the (2 x 1) reconstructed surface of Na0.65W03(001) have been observed by scanning tunnelling microscopy, with an 0-0 separation (2.2 A) that is significantly less than twice the ionic radius of the oxide ion (2.8 A).
