Real-Time Lung Tumour Motion Modeling for Adaptive Radiation Therapy Using Lego Mindstorms

Abstract: An anthropomorphic phantom was built using LEGO Mindstorms r and programmed in LabVIEW r for Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART) purpose, to simulate the processes of breathing in the lung district during treatments. A thoracic cavity is prototyped by means of an 8 ribs apparatus and 2 artificial tumor masses, driven by intelligent brick LINUX r OS CPU. An optical surface tracking system (VisionRT r Þ and a QUASAR TM phantom allow correlation between physiological, robotic motion and surrogated signal. Patient's … Show more

“…In [ 39 ], an anthropomorphic phantom is built using LEGO Mindstorms EV3 for Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART) purposes in order to simulate the breathing processes in the lung district during treatments. The humanoid phantom is tested in clinical practice, where breaths and CT studies of 12 patients are analyzed.…”

“…Automated liquid handling systems are used day by day to develop protocols and for reliability in laboratory fields such as synthetic biology, microbiology, or genetics. LEGO Mindstorms, which is widely used in the programming of complex systems and offers a wide range of work, provides opportunities such as designing machine prototypes in the field of robotics (Guidi, 2015). It has been reported in the literature that liquid-processing LEGO robotic systems can be used in biotechnology experiments (Gerber, 2017).…”

“…For instance, there are some studies using LabVIEW in the fields such as education [1][2][3][4], health [5,6], food and beverage control [7,8], astronomy [9] and image processing [8,10] In addition, studies using more than one sensor [11,12], real-time systems [5,13], studies on nuclear power plants [14], test/measurement device design that requires high precision [15][16][17], non-contact motion detection systems [18] and electromagnetic imaging [19] are other applications of LabVIEW.…”
