Real-Time Patient Radiation Dose Monitoring System Used in a Large University Hospital

Abstract: Radiation dose monitoring in medical imaging examination areas is mandatory for the reduction of patient radiation exposure. Recently, dose monitoring techniques that use digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) dose structured reports (SR) have been introduced. The present paper discusses the setup of a radiation dose monitoring system based on DICOM data from university hospitals in Korea. This system utilizes the radiation dose data-archiving method of standard DICOM dose SR combined with a DI… Show more

“…The ESD is commonly employed for evaluating the patient exposure dose and the risk of radiation exposure in medicine [ 10 , 19 ]. To achieve the justification and optimization concept on the usage of medical radiation, the tendency of ESD with various phantom thicknesses should be reflected in the clinical EI.…”

“…Several methods were available to record the exposure dose for monitoring systems such as the kerma-area product meter and numerical dose determination (NDD) method [ 8 , 9 , 10 ]. However, these methods have a complicated process to measure and calculate the entrance exposure dose.…”

“…If the dose has dropped below a level of 40 μSv/h, the measurement stopped until the radiation exposure again exceeded the start trigger level. The system operated with similar dose rejection thresholds as live‐screen dosimeter systems from other manufacturers, 9 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 which increases the comparability of measurements. Furthermore, we believe that the performance in other institutions with similarly organized angiographic structures will not differ significantly given the reproducible results of radiation dose measurements in our study.…”

“…This system utilized the radiation dose dataarchiving method of standard digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) dose structured report combined with a DICOM modality performed procedure step. The capabilities of this system were to display the graphs for analyzing each patient, equipment setup, operator, and examination (14).…”
