Real Time Three‐Dimensional Echocardiographic Evaluations of Fetal Left Ventricular Stroke Volume, Mass, and Myocardial Strain: In Vitro and In Vivo Experimental Study

Abstract: RT3DE is capable of quantifying the SV, LVM, and myocardial strain of fetal-sized hearts under different conditions. This nongated RT3DE may aid the evaluation of fetal cardiac function, providing a superior understanding of the progress of fetal heart disorders.

“…STE provides deformation information of the LV, which has been reported to be valuable in identifying preclinical or subtle myocardial dysfunction. 14 16 , 26 , 30 STE has been used in TAV to evaluate cardiac mechanics in AS and AR patients, which revealed lower deformation in asymptomatic/symptomatic patients with normal LVEF when compared with healthy controls. 17 20 Few reports are available on BAV cardiac mechanics, 31 – 33 and none of them reported the subtle mechanical changes based on valvular lesion types.…”

“…The new iSTIC technology acquires high-resolution volumetric images of one cardiac cycle in only 2 s, thus reducing the effects of fetal movement on the image. iSTIC realizes real-time 3D visualization of the fetal heart, which has been shown to have many advantages[24,25,27-29]. In the present study, the iSTIC technique was used to measure right ventricular volume in normal fetuses and to evaluate right ventricular systolic function to provide a new method for more accurate and convenient evaluation of fetal heart function.…”

“…Real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) using a matrix array transducer enables the acquisition of the full 3D image of the heart and it provides unprecedented information for the quantification of cardiac function. [10] Real-time 3DE precludes the operator dependency and time-consuming acquisition associated with 2-dimensional echocardiography (2DE). It has also been reported to be able to provide accurate and reproducible volume and myocardial strain values comparable with cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR).…”
