Recent Advances and Perspectives of Carbon-Based Nanostructures as Anode Materials for Li-ion Batteries

Abstract: Rechargeable batteries are attractive power storage equipment for a broad diversity of applications. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are widely used the superior rechargeable battery in portable electronics. The increasing needs in portable electronic devices require improved Li-ion batteries with excellent results over many discharge-recharge cycles. One important approach to ensure the electrodes’ integrity is by increasing the storage capacity of cathode and anode materials. This could be achieved using nano… Show more

“…Some of these materials are also capable of reversible Li ion intercalation and have appreciable intrinsic specific capacitance. [56,68] They have been utilized in various 3D printing techniques (extrusion-based, inkjet printing, IJP; selective laser sintering (SLS)) in the form of polymer-based conductive composites used for fabrication of electrically conductive structures, supercapacitor electrodes, Li-ion battery electrodes. [68][69][70][71][72] Carbon nanotubes are promising candidates for current collector and electrode 3D printing due to high carrier mobility, superior mechanical strength and large specific surface area that can be functionalized for improved energy storage performance.…”

“…Consequently, the present LIBs have been successfully incorporated into portable consumer electronic devices, electric vehicles (EVs), and defense applications . In LIBs, different types of carbon (graphite, amorphous/hard carbon, porous carbons), alloys matrix (containing Si, Sn, Sb, Ni, Ti metals), composite alloys (a combination of carbon and an alloy), and metal oxides (Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 , TiO 2 , SnO 2 , SiO 2 ) have been extensively studied in the past three decades as anode materials. The developed anodes have been combined with high‐voltage cathodes, mainly LiCoO 2 , LiFePO 4 , LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 , (LNMC), LiMn 2 O 4 , and LiMn 1.5 Ni 0.5 O 4 materials, demonstrating a prolonged cycling stability while maintaining a high Coulombic efficiency during charge–discharge cycles .…”

“…New materials must deliver better than existing ones on certain important parameters such as cyclic stability, voltage hysteresis, operating potential, current stability and capacity . The key anode materials researched thus far fall into three broad categories of conversion, alloying and intercalation types and are limited in one way or another to stake the claim of perfection in terms of desirable performance parameters . Silicon is the most notable of the anode materials that is researched with great interest.…”
