“…Optical and Photonic Sensing: The optical and photonic sensing platforms have been widely employed in the development of biomedical and analytical sensing devices because of their high accuracy, efficiency, and versatility. [135] The modification of physicochemical characteristics such as electronic bandgap, dielectric behavior, electrical conductivity, and structural design, can improve the light response and the detection performance in biodegradable optical sensors and e-skins. In this regard, the application of natural and synthetic biodegradable materials and waveguides such as cellulose, [136,137] chitin, [138] silk, [139] PLA, [140] and PLLA [141] have been reported.…”

“…When coated with adequate fluorescent polymers, they also allow for the detection of molecules that are otherwise imperceptible with optical spectroscopy [ 7 , 8 ]. Moreover, the availability of fiber bundles and microstructured fibers (e.g., photonic crystal fibers) has offered novel means for the development of devices for fluorescence imaging, as well as sensor arrays [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. The combination of novel fiber optic structures and fluorescent polymer composites has thus increased the potential of fiber optic sensors in biochemical and biomedical applications.…”

“…Therefore, highly sensitive RI sensors based on photonic structures lead us to the cost effective, rapid, and precise detection of substances, making them suitable for environmental monitoring, food quality control, and especially medical diagnosis such as detecting bacterial infections, cancer, disorders, various physical and biological parameters to examine and treat health conditions, etc. [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. In recent times liquid biopsies are becoming a popular medical diagnosis technique to detect and monitor cancerous tumors through the detection of different biomarkers such as circulating tumor cells (CTCs), circulating tumor nucleic acids ctNAs (ctDNA, microRNAs), as well as extracellular vesicles (EVs) [ 8 ].…”
