Abstract: As is the case in all parts of gastroenterology and hepatology, there have been many advances in our knowledge and understanding of small intestinal diseases. Over 1000 publications were reviewed for 2008 and 2009, and the important advances in basic science as well as clinical applications were considered. “…Fish are useful models for gut‐related diseases (Thomson et al , 2012a,b; Kamareddine et al , 2020; Ber et al , 2021; Lee et al , 2021; Montoro‐Huguet et al , 2021). The discovery of fish CM indicates more differences between fish and mammal gut structures, which affects the comparative studies based on fish models.…”

“…They play a key role in defense against a broad range of intestinal microbes and in the regulation of host immunity [ 8 ]. Paneth cells derive from fast-cycling crypt base columnar cells, which are involved in crypt regeneration; they differentiate whilst migrating towards the crypt base, from which they are eventually cleared by phagocytosis [ 9 , 10 ]. Paneth cells are mostly located within the small bowel; in adults they occur normally in smaller numbers in the proximal large bowel (caecum to transverse colon), but have been reported more distally only in pathological states [ 11 ].…”

“…Probiotics have shown several benefits in human health (Parvez, Malik, Ah Kang & Kim, 2006). Some of the health benefits of probiotics include: i) cancer prevention (Baldwin et al, 2010), ii) reduction of Helicobacter pylori infection (Gotteland, Brunser & Cruchet, 2006;Pacifico et al, 2014), iii) reduction of cholesterol and triacylglycerol plasma concentrations (Jones, Martoni, Parent & Prakash, 2011), iv) beneficial effects on mineral metabolism (Lamberti et al, 2011), v) relief from constipation (Malaguarnera et al, 2012), vi) reduction of allergic symptoms (Matsuda et al, 2012), and vii) relief from irritable bowel syndrome (Thomson, Chopra, Clandinin & Freeman, 2012).…”
