Recent Advances on the Corrosion Resistance of Low-Density Steel: A Review

Abstract: This paper reviews the previous literature on the alloy composition design of low-density steel (LDS), focusing on the effect of Al, Mn, Ni, and other alloy elements on the formation of the steel matrix and second phase, and provides classification. The microstructure of LDS after processing includes the matrix structure, к-carbide, and B2 (FeAl, NiAl, or MnAl) phase of ferritic LDS, austenitic LDS, and dual-phase LDS. The influence of alloy elements on the corrosion resistance of LDS is derived from the addit… Show more

“…This is because every construction that experiences corrosion will also experience stress simultaneously, this condition is closely related to efforts to optimize the process of maintaining, repairing, and rehabilitating steel bridges during the design life of the bridge. The stress acting on the structure causes a decrease in the corrosion resistance of the steel [22,23,24,25,26].…”

“…As a result, the stable pits can grow continuously after the initiation. Many factors can markedly influence the pitting corrosion of stainless steels, which have been extensively investigated in the last several decades [24,[31][32][33][34][35][36]. The effect of DO on the pitting corrosion of passive metals is very complicated.…”

“…The effect of DO on the pitting corrosion of passive metals is very complicated. It is reported that DO can promote the formation of passive film by providing the necessary potential for passivation [14], and positively shift the corrosion potential [12][13][14][15][36][37][38] and pitting potential [12,13]. On the other hand, the presence of oxidizing such as DO in a Cl − -containing solution will further promote the localized corrosion through accelerating the cathodic process [24,39], which is extremely dangerous.…”
