Recent Developments in the Preparation of Silicones with Antimicrobial Properties

Abstract: This Focus Review describes state-of-the-art methods for the preparation of antimicrobials ilicones. Given the diversity of antimicrobiala ctivity and their mechanisms, the performance of these materials is highly dependento nt he characteristics of the polymeric matrix. Therefore, different synthetic routes have been developed, such as 1) physical treatments,2 )chemical transformations, and 3) copolymerization. This classification is not exclusive,s os ome products belong to more than one class. Herein, we at… Show more

“…Various polymeric materials (including silicones) may be modified to become biofilmresistant and enhance their antibacterial properties [11][12][13][14]. Initial tests that were directed towards killing the microorganisms were mainly based on the use of toxic quaternary Molecules 2021, 26, 814. https://doi.org/10.3390/molecules26040814 https://www.mdpi.com/journal/molecules ammonium-based materials [15].…”

“…This surface hydrophobicity contributes to their biocompatibility but also makes silicones susceptible to initial protein absorption and subsequent biofilm formation. [ 4 ] Biofilm on silicone surfaces can cause medical device failure and can lead to potentially fatal healthcare associated infections. These infections remain a leading challenge to the healthcare community and new strategies for antimicrobial and biofilm resistant materials are urgently needed.…”

“…The infection rates were not significantly different between the two groups; 2 cases of infection occurred in the WD group. The physical properties of silicone materials are antimicrobial in nature (see Kottman 29 for review); thus, it was expected that the WD would exhibit comparable infection rates as TA.…”
