Recent insight into potential acute respiratory distress syndrome

Abstract: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is an acute inflammatory lung injury, characterized by increased pulmonary capillary endothelial cells and alveolar epithelial cells permeability leading to respiratory failure in the absence of cardiac failure. Despite recent advances in treatments, the overall mortality because of ARDS remains high. Biomarkers may help to diagnose, predict the severity, development, and outcome of ARDS in order to improve patient care and decrease morbidity and mortality. This revie… Show more

“…Increased IL-6 plasma levels correlated with morbidity and mortality in COVID-19 patients [32,33]. Furthermore, this cytokine might be directly involved in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury, presumably via recruitment of inflammatory cells in the lung [34][35][36]. It is a hallmark cytokine released during macrophage activation syndrome and cytokine storm, which are both potential key processes in COVID-19 disease exacerbation [37].…”

“…The immune system is a key player in the etiology of ARDS, according to current knowledge [4]. The severity of lung injury in ARDS patients was linked to serum cytokine and chemokine levels [5]. Infected epithelial cells release cytokines, which attract leukocytes, macrophages, and nearby endothelial cells, causing an increase in cytokine and chemokine production and the symptom known as cytokine storm [6].…”
