Recent Progress in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon‐Based Organic Co‐Crystals

Abstract: Recently, the development of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)‐based organic co‐crystals has attracted increasing interest due to their unique packing modes, optic‐electronic properties and various potential applications in electronic, optic‐electronic and magnetic devices. In this account, we mainly discuss the definition, classification, packing patterns, preparation methods, and applications of PAH‐based co‐crystals. Specifically, the main categories of PAH‐based organic co‐crystals, the frequent method… Show more

“…[42,43] Subsequently, lots of groups focus on the construction, investigating their magnetic, optical, and electronic properties and testing the potential applications, including ferroelectrics, photovoltaic behavior, nonlinear optics, optical waveguide, luminescent response, and pharmaceutics. [33][34][35]44,45] Figure 1 lists a few representative acceptors and donors for the construction of cocrystals. Among these molecules, the planar coronene, in which one benzene ring surrounds with six benzene units, is a highly symmetric (D 6h ) arene and has been widely selected as a model and the building unit for the construction of cocrystals and high conjugated molecules.…”

“…[30][31][32] Especially, the self-assembled micro/nanoarchitectures of PAHs and the potential applications in photoelectrical devices and biofields have attracted many researchers' interests. [33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40] Herein, we systematically summarize our research advances on these compounds and will discuss them according to following parts: (1) Heteroaggregation. As one promising heteroaggregation platform, organic micro/nanococrystals have been demonstrated as an important model with definite growth direction, negligible defects, and the possibility to display diverse physical properties.…”

“…Organic magnetic materials are applied in sensors ( Xu et al, 2017 ), magnetic recording ( Zhang et al, 2008 ; Wei et al, 2019 ), microwave devices ( Ustinov et al, 2007 ), magnetic memories ( Bibes and Barthélémy, 2008 ; Vopson, 2016 ), and gyrators ( Zhai et al, 2009 ) have aroused great interest in recent years. Cocrystal engineering synthesizes two or more components, has emerged as an intelligent way to design and tailor the multifunctional magnetic properties of organic materials ( Hu and Zhang, 2020 ; Wang et al, 2021 ). Although research on cocrystals in magnetic field began later, it is gaining prominence ( Wang and Zhang, 2020 ).…”

“…There is growing interest in molecular crystals of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) as potential electronic materials for their highly conjugated π-electron system. 1,2 However, not all PAHs exhibit conductor or semiconductor behavior when crystallized. 3−8 Actually, many PAH molecules are still electrically insulators, mainly due to the low population of charge carriers.…”
