Recent trends and progress in the immersed boundary method

Abstract: The immersed boundary method is a methodology for dealing with boundary conditions at fluid–fluid and fluid–solid interfaces. The immersed boundary method has been attracting growing attention in the recent years due to its simplicity in mesh processing. Great effort has been made to develop its new features and promote its applications in new areas. This review is focused on assessing the immersed boundary method fundamentals and the latest progresses especially the strategies to address the challenges and th… Show more

“…Following the pioneer work of Peskin, numerous scientists have contributed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the IBM. Huang et al [11] introduced the variety of IBM fundamentals and assessed the latest progresses especially the strategies to address the challenges and the applications of the IBM.…”

“…Thus, an efficient way to obtain the environmental flow information is of crucial importance for the agent to learn in a reasonable time, which is a great challenge for numerical simulations 34 . Here the environmental flow information is updated by using an immersed boundary–lattice Boltzmann method (IB–LBM) which makes excellent use of the advantages of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and the immersed boundary method (IBM) 35 41 . Compared to traditional numerical methods based on the Navier–Stokes equations, the IB–LBM is more efficient 42 , 43 and is a promising alternative in combining with reinforcement learning methods.…”

“…Maxey (2017) summarized several numerical methods, including a brief introduction to IB methods, in numerical simulations of particulate flows with focuses on the isothermal flows and hydrodynamics. Recently, Huang and Tian (2019) have reviewed the applications of the IB method in FSI problem, with a specific focus on high Reynolds number and supersonic problems. However, all of the aforementioned reviews pay attention to the isothermal problems, and there is currently no review article about the development and application of the IB methods to multiphase flows with heat and mass transfer.…”
