Reclassification of the North Temperate Taxa Associated with Staphylinus Sensu Lato, Including Comments on Relevant Subtribes of Staphylinini (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae)

Abstract: This paper presents a reclassification of the north temperate taxa associated with the genus Staphylinus sensu lato, and comments on relevant subtribes of the tribe Staphylinini. The treatment contains the following: (1) a historical introduction to the past and recent classification of these genera; (2) a discussion of the characters used herein, many of them being unconventional and used for the first time, and many of which are illustrated either by SEM photomicrographs or by line drawings; (3) a key to the… Show more

“…15, 16). Generally the Paederinae, including the Procirrina, lack the abundance of cephalic ridges described by Smetana and Davies (2000), but many paederines do have a transverse carina or ridge on the dorsal surface that extends onto the lateral surface. Smetana and Davies (2000: 5, 8) discussed and illustrated a similar carina that they referred to as the nuchal ridge.…”

“…Blackwelder (1936: figs. 22, 23) presents them as a pair of black spots and Smetana and Davies (2000: fig. 2) label them as fossae and they are shown, but unlabeled, in their figures 42 and 54.…”

“…Such features of Philonthus neoniger as smooth pronotal disk with only one puncture in each of two dorsal "rows", dense and rugose punctation of elytra and abdomen, and, especially, a rather peculiar shape of the aedeagus (Figs 3,4) allow it to be unambiguously placed in the subgenus Raucalius Tottenham, 1949. Members of the subtribe Xanthopygina, instead, are usually characterized by a complete postmandibular ridge; the inferior marginal line of pronotal hypomeron well separated from the superior marginal line, both lines continuing uninterrupted and separated along the prosternal margin. Also, unlike Philonthina, all members of Xanthopygina have a pair of empodial setae (Smetana and Davies 2000). (Cameron, 1948), comb.…”
