“…It is still uncertain whether in HS patients anemia is related to chronic causes or it is due to other factors at play [24]. However, the association between HS and anemia was first reported almost 50 years ago due to the chronic inflammatory process [1, 25, 26]. This condition might be aggravated by significant blood loss via sanguineous drainage from HS fistulas, also contributing to the development or preservation of anemia and could give rise to the fatigue that is often attributed to the psychological impact of the disease [1, 26-28].…”

“…HS is considered a systemic inflammatory disease associated with other comorbidities such as metabolic syndrome, chronic intestinal diseases, and depression [6-8]. Furthermore, syndromic forms of HS have been described and their clinical behavior appears to be more severe, recalcitrant to treatment, and associated with a poorer quality of life compared to the nonsyndromic form [9].…”

“…Although the pathogenesis is complex and not yet clear, genetic susceptibility, mechanical stress, obesity, smoking, and hormonal factors are recognized risk factors associated with the development or worsening of HS [6, 7]. Emerging evidence suggests that HS is associated with other comorbidities [8], while data concerning the coexistence of HS and Down syndrome (DS) are scarce [9-11]. …”
