Recompression of JPEG images by requantization

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, we report a novel heuristic for requantizing JPEG images. The resulting images are generally smaller and often have improved perceptual image quality over a "blind" requantization approach, that is, one that does not consider the properties of the quantization matrices. The heuristic is supported by a detailed mathematical treatment which incorporates the wellknown Laplacian distribution of the AC discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients with an analysis of the error introduced by r… Show more

“…Another branch of studies focused on further compression of JPEG images rather than the quality improvement [9,17,18,19,20,21]. Some of these studies [18,19,20] approached a lossless manner for further compression as the proposed method does while the other tried to make further compression in a lossy manner.…”

“…Some of these studies [18,19,20] approached a lossless manner for further compression as the proposed method does while the other tried to make further compression in a lossy manner. One research attempted to achieve better compression ratio along with better quality [9] although it changes Baseline JPEG algorithm considerably.…”

“…Werner [1] investigated the requantization problem to transcode MPEG-2 I-frame, where the transcoding problem is analyzed theoretically, and an efficient requantizer based on the analysis is derived. In [2] AC DCT coefficients. Nakajima et al [3] determined the requantization step size to convert a high bit rate MPEG stream into the lower bit rate one by using the activity in the spatial domain.…”
