Reconfigurable Photonic Generation of Binary Modulated Microwave Signals

Abstract: A novel photonic scheme of binary modulated microwave signals generation based on a dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) modulator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The scheme is highly reconfigurable, amplitude keying signal (ASK), phase-shift keying signal (PSK) or frequency-shift keying (FSK) signal can be generated by appropriately setting the amplitude of the binary coding signal. The coding signal and local oscillator (LO) signals are independent with each other, binary mo… Show more

“…90 • phase difference between the orthogonal signals is achieved by attaching the quarter-wavelength transmission line to the horizontal feed line of the antenna. The PSK modulator inverts the phase between 0 • and 180 • on the vertical feed line of the antenna according to the control voltage [13,14] like a 1-bit phase shifter. Therefore, the proposed configuration operates as the LHCP and RHCP switching antenna.…”

“…waveform segments, they generate an LFM signal with a time-bandwidth product of 3846.2. Other papers [10,11] use special coding sequences like Barker codes and pseudo-random codes to PSK modulate LFM signals, further expanding the time-bandwidth product of the generated LFM signals. In the realm of reconfigurable modulation signal generation, a paper [12] proposes a scheme based on DP-QPSK modulator for generating reconfigurable modulation signals. In this scheme, by changing the working bias point of the modulator, they achieve switching between ASK, FSK, and PSK modulation formats for the generated microwave signals.…”
