Reconstructing the Roman Site “Aquis Querquennis” (Bande, Spain) from GPR, T-LiDAR and IRT Data Fusion

Abstract: This work presents the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of one of the most important archaeological sites in Galicia: "Aquis Querquennis" (Bande, Spain) using in-situ non-invasive ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and Terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging (T-LiDAR) techniques, complemented with infrared thermography. T-LiDAR is used for the recording of the 3D surface of this particular case and provides high resolution 3D digital models. GPR data processing is performed through the novel software tool "to… Show more

“…Its occupation dates from the last quarter of the first to the middle of the second centuries. The encampment was likely built to monitor the construction of the roads communicating the cities of Bracara Augusta (Braga, Portugal) and Asturica Augusta (Astorga, Spain) (Puente et al, 2018). As it can be observed in Figure 5, the settlement presents a classic layout with a rectangular shape and two main orthogonal paths and the area of study occupies 3 hectares.…”

“…The Aquis Querquennis complex is located in Bande (Ourense, Galicia, Spain) on the banks of River Limia (Figure 2). Historical records point out that the complex was built during Vespasiano's reign (69-79 Before Cristo) [35]. After that, the place was occupied by a roman cavalry and infantry unit until around half of the following century.…”

“…It should be noted that an XZ image (typically called radargram) is obtained as a result of the GPR analysis. The values of the radargram represent the amplitude values of the different reflected pulses, which are measured as the transmitting antenna moves along the surface under study [ 21 ]. Thus, the X axis represents the distance (meters) of each trace (position of each pulse received) and the Z axis represents the two-way travel time of the radar pulses through the media.…”
