Recovery evaluation of villages reconstructed with concentrated rural settlement after the Wenchuan earthquake

Abstract: As a rural development approach, concentrated rural settlement (CRS) was used for rural reconstruction when Wenchuan earthquake opened the opportunity window of quick and wide implementation. Although CRS has both proponents and critics, few studies have investigated the recovery success of villages reconstructed with CRS. This research gap has resulted in insufficient theoretical guidance for the practice of CRS and inefficient summarization and transfer of relevant experiences. This study therefore aims to m… Show more

“…Relevant scholars analyzed the temporal and spatial changes of village vulnerability in the Loess Plateau through the data of three time periods [ 26 ]. Peng et al conducted a study on village resilience after vulnerability to seismic hazards, comparing differences in resilience in the first and second years after the disaster [ 53 ]. Static assessment is only for vulnerability and resilience status analysis; dynamic assessment can clarify the temporal and spatial changes of vulnerability and resilience, and can more intuitively reflect the changes of vulnerability and toughness.…”

“…During this process, the research team communicated with the respondents comprehensively and used their input to improve the questionnaire in terms of reliability, validity, readability, and semantic accuracy to avoid any possible ambiguities arising from terminology. Chinese was used as the common language and due attention was also paid to minimize information loss during translation in paper writing [47]. The questionnaire items used a five-point Likert scale, and each respondent answered based on their judgment.…”

“…The findings also echo classical urban development and post-disaster recovery theories. For example, the infrastructure settings such as medical resources and neighborhood greenery management show significant but inverse impacts on Wuhan's recovery; some BECs of the socioeconomic environment, such as housing price, can effectively reflect the disaster and secondary disaster development (Aldrich 2012;Peng et al, 2020;Rouhanizadeh et al, 2020).…”
