“…The present investigation found that both anxiety and depression were associated with a greater likelihood of receiving a palliative encounter. Some studies have found depression to be associated with receipt of palliative 15 and hospice 16,17 services. “…Findings specific to self‐reported elevated anxiety are limited but indicate higher odds of receiving anticancer therapy in the 2 weeks before death 13,14 . There are inconsistencies among these depression‐related findings with some results showing an opposite pattern of effects 15–17 .…”

Previously, we have found that men and women with SPD died younger from their terminal cancer compared to non-SPD (by 8 years for schizophrenia 4 , 5 years for bipolar disorders 5 and 3 years for recurrent major depressive disorder 6 ). Women with SPD have a loss of chance of being screened for breast cancer 7 .…”

“…1,2 The current care organization is not adequate to address mental disorders (eg, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression) that emerge as a major health disparity category. [2][3][4][5][6] Patients with mental disorders have a marked decrease in life expectancy (eg, approximately 14 years on average for patients with schizophrenia). 7 They are confronted with persistent gaps in access to and receipt of mental health care.…”
