Silicone rubber/ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer/magnesium sulfate whisker composites containing ethylene‐acrylic acid copolymer (MS/SR/EVM/EAA) as a compatibilizer were successfully prepared. Moreover, the magnesium sulfate whisker surface was modified with 3 wt% of silane coupling agent (KH570), resulting in composites including (unmodified magnesium sulfate whisker) uMS/SR/EVM, (modified magnesium sulfate whisker) mMS/SR/EVM, and mMS/SR/EVM/EAA were compared. The values of thermal decomposition activation energy (Ea) calculated by the two different methods (Kissinger and Friedman methods) show that the composites filled with 5 and 20 phr whiskers have lower values of activation energy (Ea) than the SR/EVM blend. The tensile strength of composites with a 5 phr modified whisker is 14.5 MPa, which is higher than that of the SR/EVM blend and uMS5/SR/EVM composite. The tear strength of the composite with 20 phr mMS is 51.6 kN m−1, much higher than that of the composite with 20 phr uMS and SR/EVM blend. The mechanical properties were also investigated after thermal aging of the composites at 85°C for 48 h. The thermal conductivity of the composites with high filler loading was studied.

Seiring dengan meningkatnya konsumsi popok sekali pakai, potensi masalah lingkungan akibat pembuangan popok bekas ke lingkungan juga cenderung meningkat dan memerlukan penanganan yang serius. Salah satu upaya yang dilakukan adalah dengan mendaur ulang popok bekas untuk mendapatkan bahan-bahan yang dapat dimanfaatkan kembali untuk pembuatan produk bernilai tambah. Salah satunya adalah serat yang diperoleh dari proses daur ulang popok bekas. Sekitar 70% dari serat daur ulang popok bekas dikategorikan sebagai serat panjang dengan panjang serat lebih dari 2 mm. Percobaan pemanfaatan serat daur ulang popok bekas sebagai serat pensubstitusi pada pembuatan kertas/karton telah dilakukan pada laboratorium dan inkubator bisnis. Pada percobaan laboratorium, penggunaan serat daur ulang popok bekas pada lembaran dari OCC atau waste sludge menghasilkan kekuatan lembaran yang lebih tinggi. Sedangkan pada percobaan di Inkubator Bisnis menunjukkan hasil yang kurang seragam. Serat daur ulang popok bekas berpotensi dimanfaatkan sebagai serat penguat (reinforcing fiber) pada lembaran kertas/karton dari serat daur ulang kertas bekas. Kata kunci: popok, kertas, karton, daur ulang, serat panjang The Utilization of Used Diapers Recycled Fibers in Paper and Paperboard Making Abstract Along with the increasing consumption of disposable diapers, the potential for environmental problems due to their disposal into the environment also tends to increase and requires serious handling. One of the efforts made is by recycling used diapers to obtain materials that can be reused to manufacture value-added products. One of them is a recycled fiber obtained from used diapers recycling process. Approximately 70% of used diapers recycled fiber is categorized as long fiber with a fiber length of more than 2 mm. Experiments on the utilization of used diapers recycled fibers as substitute fibers in the manufacture of paper/paperboard have been carried out in the laboratory and the Business Incubator. In the laboratory experiment, the use of recycled fibers on sheets from Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) or waste sludge resulted in higher sheet strength. Whereas the experiments in the Business Incubator showed less uniform results. Therefore, the ussed diapers recycled fibers have the potential to be used as reinforcing fibers on paper/paperboard made from waste paper recycled fibers. Waste management is a crucial priority issue for all countries in this environmentally conscious era. Proper waste management of disposable diapers is one of the issues at the forefront. The unprecedented growth of the world urban population has left many cities grappling with disposable diapers clogging landfills. It is a problematic issue that if not mitigated could overburden existing waste management systems. This mini-review article aims to critically review relevant life cycle assessment studies (LCA) on single-use disposable diapers and the environmental impact incurred at each stage of its life cycle. Different technical and non-technical disposable diaper waste management approaches have been explored in literature, but studies directed towards pyrolysis conversion of disposable diapers post-consumer waste are notably very scarce. The review further examines the potential of pyrolysis as an end-of-life waste management option for disposable diapers. Finally, this study highlights gaps in the literature and recommends the scope for future research.
