Redesigning business processes: a methodology based on simulation and process mining techniques

Abstract: Nowadays, organizations have to adjust their business processes along with the changing environment in order to maintain a competitive advantage. Changing a part of the system to support the business process implies changing the entire system, which leads to complex redesign activities. In this paper, a bottom-up process mining and simulation-based methodology is proposed to be employed in redesign activities. The methodology starts with identifying relevant performance issues, which are used as basis for rede… Show more

“…Given an event log, a simulation model can be discovered and simulated using ProM and CPN Tools. In [9] a similar approach is presented that shows how to redesign a business process and predict its future performance based on simulation. The resource models used in both approaches are very simple, for example, the authors in [9] do not say anything about resources and their involvement in the simulation and redesign of business processes.…”

The resource models used in both approaches are very simple, for example, the authors in [9] do not say anything about resources and their involvement in the simulation and redesign of business processes. However, to truly map a business process onto a simulation model, it is crucial that the resource perspective is modeled accurately.…”

“…The current work focuses on complementing the methodology proposed by Maruster [13], by emphasizing the project understanding phase, featured by process scope analysis, process redesign goal setting and performance gap analysis. According to Vander Alast [1] one of the reasons why process mining has not been widely applied is the lack of a comprehensive methodology that is capable of linking organization Key Process Indicators (KPIs) with actual analysis and redesign efforts.…”

“…Maruster [13]proposes a process redesign methodology based on the combination of process mining and simulation techniques, and presents its application to three case studies. Mainly supported by CPN simulation, the method consists of three phases: process performance variable definition, process analysis (as-is), and process redesign (to-be).…”
