Redirected Touching: Training and adaptation in warped virtual spaces

Abstract: Redirected Touching is a technique in which virtual space is warped to map many virtual objects onto one real object that serves as a passive haptic prop. Recent work suggests that this mapping can often be predictably unnoticeable and have little effect on task performance. We investigated training and adaptation on a rapid aiming task in a real environment, an unwarped virtual environment, and a warped virtual environment. Participants who experienced a warped virtual space reported an initial strange sensat… Show more

“…Sait et al [7], [8] mapped a single tangible object into multiple virtual ones by combining a redirection approach, that uses rotational adjustments to align the user during virtual locomotion, and a resetting approach, that introduces a discrete rotational update when the user virtually approaches a target for interaction. Redirection approaches have also been used in [9], [10].…”

“…These can even represent slightly different geometries if redirection techniques are applied (Kohli, Whitton, & Brooks, 2013). The authors mention tangible props as a feasible solution in many settings.…”

“…The authors mention tangible props as a feasible solution in many settings. These can even represent slightly different geometries if redirection techniques are applied (Kohli, Whitton, & Brooks, 2013). The resulting spatio-temporal distortions can go unnoticed by users, but possible side effects are not yet understood.…”

“…Redirected touching is another benefit of visual dominance that enables the use of one haptic device for multiple virtual objects [4,40]. The process involves either redirecting a user's hand, or warping the perceived location of virtual objects relative to the haptic device.…”
