Reduced lung function and risk of atrial fibrillation in The Copenhagen City Heart Study

Abstract: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has been associated with a high frequency of arrhythmias. Few studies have analysed the role of reduced lung function in predicting atrial fibrillation (AF). The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and risk of first episode of AF in a prospective study.Data from 13,430 males and females without previous myocardial infarction, who participated in the Copenhagen City Heart Study, were analysed. Ne… Show more

“…Previously described AF risk factors [15][16][17][18] were defined by ICD-9-CM codes 19,20 present on admission for heart failure, myocardial infarction, hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Acute factors were obtained from ICD-9-CM codes for acute organ dysfunction diagnoses, 21,22 electrolyte abnormalities, right heart catheterization, infectious pathogen type (gram positive vs. gram negative bacteria vs. fungal vs. none reported) and infection source.…”

“…In patients with AF, however, oral anticoagulants have been employed to a lesser degree than it should have done according to the most recent guidelines for the secondary prevention of stroke [31,37]. This is even more important if we take into account that the population is older than that of other studies [38][39][40] and that age by itself is a powerful risk factor for cardioembolic relapse.…”

“…We analyzed the data of the SETI (Studio Epidemiologico Toscano Ictus) study [6] relative to all the consecutive patients admitted for stroke in the Internal Medicine Departments of Tuscany in a three months period (March 1-May 31,2003). Data came from a collecting sheet filled for each patient (discharged or died) and aimed to determine the burden of each single stroke.…”
