Reduced Systemic Levels of IL‐10 Are Associated with the Severity of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Insulin Resistance in Morbidly Obese Humans

Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been related to elevation of inflammatory cytokines and development of insulin resistance in morbidly obese (MO) subjects. However, it is still unclear whether the systemic concentration of anti-inflammatory mediators is also affected in MO subjects directly related to the severity of OSA and level of insulin resistance. Normal weight and MO subjects were subjected to overnight polysomnography in order to establish the severity of OSA, according to the apnea-hypopnea index (AH… Show more

“…Serum levels of this cytokine appeared to be inversely associated with insulin resistance and TNF‐α serum levels in normal and morbidly obese subjects (43). Peripheral overexpression of IL‐10 was seen to improve glucose tolerance and to reduce Tnf‐ a expression in WAT of ob/ob mice (44).…”

“…En este sentido, se ha descrito que el incremento del AU intracelular favorece la infiltración de macrófagos en el tejido adiposo, lo cual lleva a un incremento subsecuente en las concentraciones extracelulares de TNF-α. Este fenómeno se ha observado en los adipocitos [33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40] ,…”

“…Leon-Cabrera and colleagues found decrease in IL-10 levels were significantly related to increased Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), hyperinsulinemia, and insulin resistance than morbid and control individuals without OSA. (Leon-Cabrera et al, 2015). Pro-inflammatory cytokines have a role in the development of insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease (Qian et al, 2012).…”
