Obscure mealybug, Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret), is a cosmopolitan pest that causes damage by suction of vascular juices and the production of honeydew, as well as for being a quarantine insect. Within control options, entomopathogenic fungi are a good alternative, nevertheless, more research is needed. In this research, the Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae (Metschnikoff) isolate Qu-M984 was evaluated on P. viburni under laboratory conditions. Virulence was evaluated by lethal dose 50 (LD 50 ) and lethal time 50 (LT 50 ), for each of the four life stages of the female. The doses tested were 10 5 , 10 6 , 10 7 and 10 8 conidia mL -1 . Also fecundity, egg size, fertility, and longevity of adult females were evaluated at doses of 10 5 and 10 6 conidia mL -1 , the evaluations were made every 2 d throughout the insect life time. The LD 50 and LT 50 obtained were variable for each life stage, although without statistical differences among life stages (P > 0.05), ranging from LD 50 = 7.3 × 10 5 to 4.9 × 10 9 conidia mL -1 and LT 50 = 7.74 to 9.97 d at 10 8 conidia mL -1 . Significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) were observed on longevity at 10 6 conidia mL -1 . Longevity was 29% less compared to the control. This result on longevity at relatively low dose is relevant due to the fact that decrease possibilities to find live quarantine insects at the moment of harvest. Fertility, fecundity and egg size showed no differences (P > 0.05).

A knowledge base of scientific and regulatory data relevant in the context of risk assessment of microbial plant protection products (PPPs) for human health was established, taking into consideration conditions 1 to 4 in Regulation (EU) 546/2011 that must be met before authorisation can be granted. We screened scientific publications and documents from governmental and institutional sources and extracted relevant information into a database, performed comparative genome analyses to explore possibilities and limitations of applying read-across among PPP strains, and discussed the collective findings among a group of experts in relevant fields. Besides information on factors relevant for the evaluation of microbial PPP strains regarding pathogenicity, infectivity, and toxicity, information was collected on methods used to analyse the PPP species' ability to persist and grow in test animals, for detecting microbial DNA transfer, for testing microbial compounds for potential toxicity, and for detecting toxin production from PPP strains. Questions arising from the reviewed scientific and grey literature were how to address the specific biological properties of PPP strains and how to take into consideration realistic exposure scenarios and a natural background of environmental microorganisms in the risk assessment. Results from the present work imply that pathogenicity traits have to be considered as strain specific and that, hence, read-across comparison cannot be used. From a scientific point of view, it was highly recommended to provide whole genome sequencing data of PPP strains to allow their unambiguous identification, while other technological developments such as the use of metabolomics data were seen as an option for future implementation. Transmission of conidia between mates of the Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), was studied using two isolates of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum Petch (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) (formerly M. anisopliae). After one beetle was inoculated and caged with a mate for 6 h, conidia were rinsed off each beetle using Tween-80 and pentane to count conidia transferred. Treated males transmitted more conidia to females than treated females transferred to males. Untreated partners did not die as quickly as their inoculated mates, but died significantly faster than controls. For beetles inoculated with ARSEF 7711, the difference in time to death between inoculated beetles and their untreated mates was shorter when males were inoculated than when females were inoculated. We hypothesize that greater conidial transmission from males to females was due to their relative positions during copulation and the prolonged post-copulatory mate-guarding characteristic of males.
