Reduction of nonlinear intrachannel effects by channel asymmetry in transmission lines with strong bit overlapping

Abstract: Abstract-We have examined the statistics of simulated bit-error rates in optical transmission systems with strong patterning effects and have found strong correlation between the probability of marks in a pseudorandom pattern and the error-free transmission distance. We discuss how a reduced density of marks can be achieved by preencoding optical data.Index Terms-Forward-error correction (FEC), numerical analysis, optical fiber communication, run length codes.

“…Generalizing the result of [5], [7] presents the solution of the general Markov process in a closed form. Since the purpose of encoding is to favor particular states and avoid others, no matter what current state, it may suffice to select the skew parameters in a manner that ignores the source state.…”

“…Under such conditions the main contribution to the bit error rate comes from the ghosts pulses that appear in logical-zero time slots surrounded by symmetric patterns of logical-ones [4]. Mitigation of intra-channel nonlinear effects by channel coding has been proposed in [5], [6]. Suppression of the ICFWM effects by employing a pre-encoding was studied in [4], [7]- [9].…”
