Sixteen species from the Lower Silurian (mostly Aeronian and rarely Telychian) of South China have been assigned previously to the brachiopod family Pentameridae, mainly to the genus Pentamerus. Study of intrapopulation variation suggests that 13 species from the upper Aeronian Lojoping Formation of the Yichang area, western Hubei Province, can be synonymized with Sulcipentamerus dorsoplanus, the most abundant pentamerid species of South China but confined to the Yichang area. The conspicuously high and obtuse ventral umbo, strong ventribiconvexity and a sulcate anterior commissure warrant genus status for Sulcipentamerus, independent of Pentamerus. True Pentamerus is rare in South China, known only from upper Aeronian rocks of Guizhou Province. Multivariate analyses indicate that Aeronian pentameride brachiopods of South China are characterized by a high level of provincialism, distinct from those of Laurentia. Also, the Aeronian pentamerides of South China or Laurentia have a low degree of similarity to those of Baltica, Siberia, Avalonia, Kazakhstan and other palaeotropically located plates or terranes. Besides South China and Laurentia, the pentamerides of other palaeotropical regions constituted a relatively tight cluster. This suggests that the palaeogeographical positions of South China and Laurentia only allowed limited or periodic faunal exchange of these generally large‐shelled brachiopods adapted to living in relatively shallow, warm waters.

Primary δ18 O signals of 97 brachiopod shells from the Lower Silurian (Llandovery) carbonate succession of Anticosti Island were used to test the hypothesis of water-depth and water-temperature gradient for the Silurian onshoreoffshore benthic assemblages (BA1-BA5 O differentiation in their shell composition; and (3) that the Pentamerus, Stricklandia, and Triplesia communities need to be investigated at the species level, as both taphonomic and oxygen isotopic data indicate that the Stricklandia planirostrata Community most likely lived in a notably warmer, shallower water than the Pentamerus palaformis Community and that Triplesia anticostiensis (BA5) lived at water temperature comparable to that of the Pentamerus habitat (BA3). This may suggest either that, at the generic level, the Pentamerus, Stricklandia, and Triplesia (Clorinda equivalent) communities may have had substantial overlap in their spatial distribution in the BA3-BA4 paleobathymetric settings or that the isotope signals are too faint to record water depth differences on a tropical shelf.

The uppermost Ordovician-lowermost Silurian (Upper Katian-Rhuddanian) is surveyed with respect to the αand β-diversity of rhynchonelliformean brachiopods. The survey is based on new collections as well as existing literature, compiled in a large, georeferenced database. The brachiopod faunas are plotted using a Geographical Information System (GIS) and subjected to density analysis to display fluctuations within the different faunas through time. In addition, an analysis is performed on the preferred relative depth ranges of the brachiopod communities through the latest Ordovician-earliest Silurian crisis interval, following the concept of Benthic Assemblage zones. Both analyses support the view of a two-phased late Ordovician (Hirnantian) decline in diversity followed by a radiation in the early Silurian (Rhuddanian). These data show that the main taxonomic loss was geographically located on the peri-Laurentian terranes, in the Laurentian epicratonic seas and on the margins of the AEgir Ocean. Refuges during the survival interval were probably located in the shallow-water zones of especially Baltica, but also Gondwana, the peri-Laurentian terranes and the Kazakh Terranes. Except for Baltica, these refuges may to a large extent be obscured by the success of the Hirnantia fauna and, thus, may not contain many true survivor taxa. South China apparently operated as a refuge for the mid-shelf to deeper-water faunas. Avalonia, Baltica, Laurentia and South China experienced increased diversity in shallowwater settings in the recovery interval. Most regions experienced increased diversity among deeper-water faunas, although this appears to have been delayed until the late Rhuddanian on Laurentia. At this time the deeper-water faunas disappeared from the peri-Laurentian terranes (as did the terranes themselves) probably as a consequence of the progressively narrowing Iapetus Ocean.
