Reference Electrodes in Metal Corrosion

Abstract: With especial regard to hydrogen electrode, the theoretical fundamentals of electrode potential, the most important reference electrodes and the electrode potential measurement have been discussed. In the case of the hydrogen electrode, it have been emphasised that there is no equilibrium between the hydrogen molecule (H 2 ) and the hydrogen (H + ), hydronium (H 3 O + ) ion in the absence of a suitable catalyst. Taking into account the practical aspects as well, the theorectical basis of working of hydrogen, c… Show more

“…In an equilibrium system, the OCP value of the gold electrode will remain stable; however, when the oxidation products dissolve (in addition to oxygen from the air), changes in OCP of the gold electrode will occur over time. The OCP variation will be related to the kinetics of the redox processes and the concentration of the dissolved species [41][42][43].…”

“…So, Ag + ion adsorption is dominated by chloride of the gel. Owing to the standard reduction potential of silver (I) metal (+0.80 V at 25 °C), It may show prior attraction toward the organic halides …”

“…Since potentials were measured with respect to the Ag/AgCl reference electrode, equivalent values versus the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) were obtained using the equation below [14]: where E (Vs SHE) is the electrode potential relative to the SHE, E (Vs reference) is the potential measured in the experiment relative to the Ag/AgCl reference and E reference (Vs SHE) is the potential of the Ag/AgCl reference relative to the SHE. For 3 M NaCl (aq) filling solution (used in this work), E reference (Vs SHE) is 209 mV [15].…”
