Reference modulation for calibrated measurements of tag backscatter

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents an approach for calibrating backscattering measurements from 860-960 MHz Ultra-High Frequency Radio Frequency Identification (UHF RFID) tags. An Sparameter model is formulated to relate diode switch and antenna input circuit parameters with the scattering performance of the calibration device. Measurements of modulated backscattered power agree with the model to within ±0.1 dB. Tag backscatter measurements can then be calibrated by comparing them to the reference signal. In an exam… Show more

“…This is the convention in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) [27,28][29, p. 467] and historical work in communications [30][31][32][33][34]. It has also applied in previous publications by some authors of this work [35][36][37]. Fields are the basic quantity in Maxwell's equations, the basis of the classical electromagnetism underpinning antenna and propagation theory, RF and microwave circuits, and commercial electromagnetic simulation tools.…”

“…To avoid this problem, at the sacrifice of the generality offered by a "black box" tag characterization, results in this paper are from measurements of available power transmitted into and received from the test antennas. Transmitted power is measured with a directional coupler and power sensor, and backscattered power is measured with the calibration introduced in [5].…”

“…In this approach, reference modulation, which is backscattered from the antenna shown on the right, is used to calibrate backscatter measurements from each sample. The details of the method can be found in [5].…”
