Reforming Shapes for Material‐aware Fabrication

Abstract: We present a data-driven framework to reform (i.e., reshape) an input multi-component mesh to simplify fabrication from a target built material. The input model (left) can be geometrically and topologically modified to a reformed shape (middle).Part conjoining specifications such as joint information can also be inferred for real fabrication (right). AbstractAs humans, we regularly associate shape of an object with its built material. In the context of geometric modeling, however, this inter-relation between f… Show more

“…In contrast, a chair fabricated from soft wood will need thicker legs in order to not break. Mesh2Fab [107] solves this problem by adapting a model's geometry based on the available material by either thickening parts or correcting the contact angles between them.…”

“…In the carpentry domain, grammars have also been used outside of reverse engineering tasks, including interactive design systems [UIM12; KLY∗14; SFJ∗17; GJG16; FSY∗15] and optimization of fabrication plans [YWM15; KHLM17; LVLR19; LOMI11; WZN∗19]. Our work uses similar fabrication‐aware representations for reverse‐engineering.…”

“…A similar system was developed by Schulz et al [14] which additionally supports users in exploring design alternatives for furniture design. Using the system of Yang [37], a furniture model can be optimized to match the specific qualities of the material used during the fabrication process. To facilitate furniture design further, sketching interfaces have been developed for furniture design [15,22].…”
