Optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) lies in side the continuum and coexists with extended waves, but it remains perfectly confined without any radiation. This unique property of BICs has led to numerous applications, such as highly surface‐sensitive and spectrally sharp resonances for photonic biosensors. However, it remains challenging to experimentally realize the BICs in a single‐particle system, especially for subwavelength structures. This study presents the existence of optical BICs in a subwavelength metallic microstructure, and quasi‐BICs are observed experimentally in a waveguide system with only a single optimized aluminum meta‐particle. This plasmonic BICs is resulting from the destructive interference of two localized surface plasmon modes. Benefiting from its strong localized field confinement and substrate‐free merit of BICs, the experimentally measured quality factor (Q‐factor) of this transmission dip reach to 273. Additionally, this meta‐particle is experimentally verified to show a good sensitivity for both solids and liquids through the spectral shift of the BICs caused transmission dip. This finding extends the optical BICs to a subwavelength scale and opens practical application opportunities for ultrasmall‐quantity detection of biochemical substances.

This paper proposes a high-performance refractive index sensor based on an all-dielectric metasurface consisting of four silicon arcs arranged back-to-back on a silicon dioxide substrate. A sharp Fano resonance with a high quality factor (Q-factor) in the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength is innovatively excited by electric quadrupole (EQ) resonance by varying the size of the inner angle. And electromagnetic field distribution and mode assessment further demonstrate that the EQ resonance mode is governed by quasi-bound states in the continuum (Q-BICs). Additionally, the ability to precisely control Fano resonance peaks is demonstrated by tuning the geometrical parameters of the structure, which makes the designed metasurface a promising gas refractive index sensing candidate. The results show that the highest Q-factor, sensitivity (S), and figure of merit (FOM) are 23,236, 603 nm/RIU, and 9869RIU−1, respectively. The proposed structure provides a good application prospect for nonlinear optical devices and air refractive index sensors.

Multi-scenario refractive index sensor based on merging BIC in an all-dielectric metasurface

In recent years, bound states in the continuum (BICs) in the all-dielectric metasurfaces have attracted considerable attention due to the low radiation loss and large quality factor (Q-factor). In this study, we design a highly sensitive refractive index sensor working in multi-scenario based on merging quasi-BIC in the silicon nitride metasurface. By adjusting the thickness of the metasurface and keeping the structural symmetry, nine BICs distributed in momentum space form the merging BIC at the Γ point with significantly enhanced Q-factor. The transmission spectra of the metasurface sensor disperse with the refractive index in multi-scenario. The modulation depth of the Fano resonance spectrum can exceed 99.9%. The sensitivity and figure of merit of the refractive index sensor based on the merging quasi-BIC can reach 41.35 nm/RIU and 13,389.1 RIU-1 for gas, 59.05 nm/RIU and 8,415.9 RIU-1 for blood, and 66.08 nm/RIU and 8,845.8 RIU-1 for cerebrospinal fluid, respectively. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of the structural deviations on the Q-factor, which of the merging quasi-BIC maintains higher than that of the isolated quasi-BIC. Our work offers a method for designing high-sensitivity sensors working in multi-scenarios, which may hold significant potential for enhancing device performance in gas and biological detection.
