Regional and demographic variations of Carotid artery Intima and Media Thickness (CIMT): A Systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Background and objective Carotid artery intima media thickness (CIMT) is a strong predictor of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) and independent phenotype of early atherosclerosis. The global variation of CIMT and its demographic association is yet unclear. We evaluated regional variations of CIMT based on WHO regions and assessed the differences by age and sex. Methods A systematic search was conducted on studies published between 1980 January up to December 2020. PubMed, Oxford Medicine Online, EBSCO, Taylor &a… Show more

“…In this review, it was reported that CIMT increases with age, and the average is 0.76 in the 60-69 years age range. In our study, the median and mean age were 66, and the mean IMT was found to be 0.71±0.14 and 0.69±0.13 in individuals without stenosis, which is correlated with the study results [17]. In a study investigating the characteristics of carotid plaques, the plaques, which were described as predominantly hypoechoic and soft plaques in our study, were found to be associated with cerebrovascular symptomatic individuals.…”

“…A systematic review by Abeysuriya et al identified variations in mean CIMT among healthy persons by sex, age groups and regions, with higher mean CIMT values among males across all regions. Overall mean CIMT was highest in the WHO AFRO (African) region (0.72 mm) and increased with age, with mean CIMT of 0.59 mm, 0.63 mm, 0.76 mm and 0.83 mm in age groups 40-49 years, 50-59 years, 60-69 years and >70 years respectively (48). Our threshold CIMT value is comparable to the mean CIMT reported for the African region and when we consider age differences in mean CIMT, our reference value is higher than thresholds reported for ages 40-59 years.…”

“…There may be ethnic variation also, as the CIMT values were higher in the studies done on the Western population [22,23]. Systemic reviews also showed that Asians have lower mean CIMT values than other ethnic groups [25].…”
